The Essence of Christianity
Christianity is the religion that worships God, with a main focus on Jesus, the Christ, who was crucified, died, and was raised from death to life.
Teaching on the nature of God is one of the unique aspects of Christianity; it defines who Jesus is. God is the one and only God, but He consists of the three persons of the Trinity (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit). This seeming contradiction is a divine mystery which no human can fully understand. The Bible does not directly state that, "God is three persons, each of them is fully God." However, when one assembles various verses of scripture, the picture emerges undeniably. For example, when Jesus says, "I and the Father are one," He touches upon the Trinitarian nature of God.
The Apostles’ Creed summarizes many of the defining teachings of Christianity as follows:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was
buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven; and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit; the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
The Holy Bible is the inspired Word of God. Its Old and New Testaments are the basic reference points for answering any questions one may have about Jesus. The Old Testament contains prophecies that foretell Jesus, and the New Testament chronicles details of His life, death and Resurrection, along with narratives and letters concerning the earliest years of the Church. The final book, The Revelation, foretells the final days of the earth and the return of Jesus.
Christianity emphasizes the Resurrection of Jesus. Religions which do not teach that the Resurrection is a physical fact are false, with the exception of Judaism, the religion of the Old Testament. Judaism is regarded as true, but incomplete.
